About The Organizer
Lou Matthews has been a transformative force in the world of mathematics education, serving as a bridge between rigorous academic pursuits and the rich tapestry of Black history and diaspora experiences. Rooted in his extensive work across the U.S., the Caribbean, and African diasporas, Dr. Lou has consistently advocated for culturally relevant pedagogy, ensuring that the stories, challenges, and aspirations of Black communities are interwoven into the fabric of mathematics teaching and learning. An innovator at heart, he introduced tools like the 'Hope Wheel' and platforms such as inspiremath.org to promote inclusion and belonging in the world of math. As the co-founder of the Journal of Urban Mathematics Education and its inaugural editor-in-chief, he carved out spaces for voices to be re-centered and which redefine math as a deeply human, liberatory journey.
