Inspire Institute of Mathematics & Science
Washington, DC - The Inspire Institute for Mathematics and Science has introduced the High-Impact Mathematics Tutor Practice Credential, a 15-hour professional credential designed for tutors, paraprofessionals, interventionists, after-school educators, and teachers who provide supplemental mathematics support.
A practice-based professional credential built on the Four Practices of High-Impact Mathematics Tutoring. Founding cohort begins October 22.
Dr. Lou Edward Matthews, founder of the Inspire Institute, explained the motivation: "My math career almost ended before it started. A tutor helped me through my first calculus class. Years later I started tutoring myself, with a mathematics degree and no preparation. Tutors are not mini teachers."
Four Practices of High-Impact Mathematics Tutoring
- Humanizing Connection:
Connect deeply with learners, their communities, and their mathematical worlds
- Adaptive Mathematical Trajectories:
Adapt and design evidence-based pathways that build strengths, address challenges, and open what comes next
- Responsive Mathematical Coaching: Notice, interpret, guide, challenge, support, and adjust in the live mathematical experience
- Mobilizing Mathematical Agency: Build confidence, autonomy, voice, purpose, and mathematical power for successful action
Program requirements
Candidates must complete four Professional Studios, conduct two tutoring encounters with a real learner, and examine evidence from their practice in two Clinical Coaching Studios. Credentials are earned through demonstrated practice, not attendance alone.
Matthews emphasized: "When achievement is the only goal, mathematics becomes a prison. Tutors can be the first place a learner feels seen by mathematics."
